A Message from Olivia Mendiola, Chief Executive Officer
Welcome to Mexican American Community Services Agency, Inc. (MACSA). The collective struggles and labor of Latinos helped shape the history of this region. The major economic shift that transformed the "Valley of the Heart's Delight" to "Silicon Valley" has brought new wealth and notoriety. Yet in the midst of constant technological advances and a prospering economy, the Latino community finds itself in a more precarious situation than ever before. We dare not ignore these detrimental effects of the valley’s unprecedented growth. According to 1999 Census Bureau data, Hispanics nationwide are less likely to have a high school diploma, more likely to be unemployed, and three times more likely to live in poverty than non-Hispanic Whites. This national phenomenon is magnified in the microcosm of Silicon Valley. The skyrocketing cost of living, overcrowded schools, limited training opportunities, and housing shortages hinder our community from becoming the prosperous, vital workforce a flourishing economy demands. For over 40 years, MACSA has enriched the lives and advanced the interest of the Latino community of Santa Clara County, for the betterment of all. We have forged partnerships with individuals, political leaders, other nonprofits and private industry to address the most urgent needs of the county's residents and to educate tomorrow's work force. Armed with a clear vision, strong business practices, strict operational principles, a highly active board, passionate staff and esteemed supporters, the agency has created a model human-service business with a proven high return on investment. The enhanced physical and emotional well-being of the youth, families and seniors we serve fuels our spirit to stay steadfast in the face of adversity. Although MACSA's past successes are significant, when compared to the need that exists in our county alone, it is clear that our work is nowhere near done. MACSA plans to continue its cutting-edge program development, open two charter high schools and delve deeper into the construction of affordable housing. I invite you to join hands with us as we strive to improve the quality of life for all Silicon Valley residents. MACSA
